Event Details

The Los Angeles Ecovillage Institute (LAEVI), in association with the UC Riverside Department of Environmental Toxicology, will be remediating the toxic soil underneath the asphalt on approximately one-third of the quarter acre property (~3,500 square feet) of a former auto-shop.

The aim of this research project is to substantiate the science for in-situ experimental remediation of toxic soils with fungi, microorganisms and plants with the goal of creating new public policy and regulations such that neighborhood groups can safely and economically remediate brownfields in their communities relying on mycorrhizal remediation techniques. The current method is to dig and haul the soil away where it becomes “someone else’s problem”, where this process will leverage natural systems to restore the existing soil to healthy conditions.
